Professor in Space Sciences

Departments of Astronomy, Earth & Planetary Sciences and Physics

 

The University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a senior faculty position in any domain related to space science, with the possibility of appointment to the Directorship of the Space Sciences Laboratory. The faculty affiliation may be with any of three academic departments (Astronomy, Physics, Earth and Planetary Science).

Berkeley has also recently launched the new Berkeley Space Center. SSL is poised to serve as a key partner as it is developed. Together with its partners, Berkeley is actively expanding an integrative initiative in space science and technology.

 

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) and has been a center of excellence for the development of innovative instrumentation for space sciences missions ever since 1959. The Laboratory has played a leading role in over 50 NASA missions, including the Apollo, Mars, and Explorer programs, as well as many international programs. Scientists at the Laboratory have been responsible for major discoveries in astrophysics, space and heliospheric physics, planetary science, and remote sensing of the Earth. The SSL Director will serve as the chief executive officer of UC Berkeley’s largest research unit, leading all aspects of strategy and program development, management, and operations, and engaging the wealth of intellectual power of UC Berkeley faculty, researchers and students. The SSL Director is appointed by and reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated history of leadership of relevant research programs, including management of scientific and technical personnel.

 

SSL staff provide unique engineering and technical capability in instrument development, flight software, project management, payload integration and test, and satellite operations. The successful candidate for this position will be expected to bring or develop new programs that can harness this expertise. We are searching for a new faculty member who is committed to research and teaching in a university setting. All three of the candidate academic departments are highly ranked in their respective fields.
