Assistant Professor of Astrophysics (Tenure-Track)

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professorship in the area of Astrophysics. Candidates are expected to have expertise in at least one of the following areas: Theoretical Astrophysics (Supernova Theory, Stellar mergers, Red Novae, Transient Phenomena, Time-domain Astrophysics), Observational/Experimental Gamma-Ray Astronomy (space-mission oriented, keV-GeV range), and/or Gravitational Wave Astronomy (data analysis, experimental, Multi-Messenger). The successful candidate is expected to teach stellar and extragalactic astrophysics to upper class undergraduate and graduate students, establish a vigorous research program, and provide service to the department and university.

LSU is the flagship school of the state of Louisiana with over 30,000 students. The Physics & Astronomy department has over 50 faculty and 100 graduate students. About a third of the professors are engaged in Astrophysics-related research including computational stellar evolution, supernovae, interstellar medium, variable stars, exoplanets, x-ray binaries, nuclear astrophysics, neutrinos, gamma rays, cosmic rays, and gravitational waves. Our professors and students use major research facilities around the world including the Hubble and James Web Space Telescopes, Tess, Gemini, CTIO, LIGO, Super-K, Auger, and Balloon/ISS instruments. Highland Road Park Observatory, located about 6 miles from campus, has 20- and 16-inch telescopes which are used for classes and public nights.

The LSU Center for Computation and Technology has long had a leadership role in high performance computing. LSU is also the lead institution for the Louisiana Space Grant and NASA EPSCoR program. This program provides support for undergraduate and graduate students involvement with NASA relevant research as well as support for NASA related research programs of early career faculty.

LSU is located in Baton Rouge which is the capital of Louisiana. Baton Rouge is on the banks of the Mississippi River with a population of about 600,000. Baton Rouge and New Orleans (about an hour's drive away) offer a vibrant culture known for its music, food, and, of course, Mardi Gras.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. physics, astronomy, or a related field.
