Job Description

As part of a new initiative to expand in multi-messenger astrophysics, the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Utah invites applications from outstanding candidates for several tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor. More senior candidates will also be considered. We encourage applications from scientists engaged in research in any area of multi-messenger astrophysics. We are especially interested in, but not limited to, candidates with expertise in data analysis that combine information from multiple astrophysical messengers. We encourage candidates with expertise in experimental techniques in particle astrophysics or in analysis using a combination of neutrinos, high-energy particles, photons, and gravitational waves.

Candidates should show promise as effective educators and mentors, and contribute positively to a diverse and inclusive environment within the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the University of Utah. The expected start date is August 2023.

The University of Utah’s Department of Physics & Astronomy is committed to pursuing key science questions within an inclusive academic community; to training and diversifying the next generation of researchers, educators, and technology workforce leaders; and to inspiring an appreciation for knowledge in students and the wider community. Utah is home to eight federally recognized Native American Tribes and the University has articulated its statement of Indigenous Land Acknowledgement.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics/Astronomy or a closely related field, a demonstrated record of accomplishment and innovation, and dedication to teaching and mentoring.

For full consideration, complete applications must be received by November 15, 2022.

Applications must include a cover letter summarizing the applicant’s interest in the position; curriculum vitae; a statement of research interests and plans; a statement of teaching philosophy; and at least three letters of recommendation.

The University of Utah values candidates who have experience working in settings with students, staff, faculty and patients from diverse backgrounds and possess a strong commitment to improving access to higher education, employment opportunities, and quality healthcare for historically underrepresented groups.
