Job Description

The Instituto de Astronomía of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (IAUNAM) has four openings for research positions in Astrophysics, at faculty level on tenure track. Three of these positions are at IAUNAM in Mexico City, while the other is at IAUNAM in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. At least two of the Mexico City positions require researchers to be under 37 or 39 years of age, for men and women respectively, by the starting date of August 1st. 2023.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy or Physics and have, at least, two years of postdoctoral experience. The main selection criteria will be outstanding research accomplishments and promise of future achievement. Faculty members are expected to carry out original research, collaborate with faculty members, and must teach Astronomy and/or Physics courses at graduate or undergraduate levels, as well as mentor students. Female candidates, members of minority groups, and Mexican citizens are encouraged to apply.

Members of the Institute conduct research in most major Astronomical and Astrophysical fields. Institute members have access to the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional in San Pedro Mártir (OAN-SPM), Baja California, as well as the Observatorio Astronómico Guillermo Haro (OAGH) in Sonora. The Institute is a member of the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory at Sierra Negra, Puebla and a partner in the Transneptunian Automated Occultation Survey-II (TAOS-II) installed at OAN-SPM. Astronomers at Mexican institutions can compete for the Mexican share of observing time at the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT, Puebla). The Institute is a funding partner of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey collaboration, which executes the SDSS-V. In addition, the Institute has extensive computing facilities and members of the Institute have access to UNAM’s general supercomputers. The Institute provides limited funds for publishing and support for observing and traveling. Further funding is available by competing for UNAM and/or other national grants.

a list of publications including a working link to the list of publications on ADS, 

a description of current and future research, stating the candidate´s integration in the Institute given the research areas developed at IAUNAM. 

and a teaching statement of past experience and future possibilities within our graduate programs.

The successful applicant will need to apply for a work permit if they do not have Mexican citizenship.

SALARY.

The initial base salary will be fixed at the standard junior faculty level determined by UNAM and is non-negotiable. Faculty members are also eligible for several performance-related bonus programs.
