Job Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Northwestern University invites applications for a new full-time faculty position in astrophysics, as part of an ongoing major expansion in this area. We seek outstanding individuals in any area of astrophysics, including theory and computation, observational astronomy, and instrumentation. We are especially seeking researchers who will complement and expand the current activities of the department in astronomy and astrophysics (www.physics.northwestern.edu) and who will become active members of CIERA, Northwestern's Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (www.ciera.northwestern.edu). We are interested in attracting astronomers who will best leverage Northwestern’s institutional access to major telescopes (Keck and MMT) or who are planning to pursue research with the Rubin Observatory. Interdisciplinary hires joint with planetary science, computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, or an engineering department will also be considered.

Applicants should have a PhD in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field, a strong record of achievement in astrophysics research, and a commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education in physics and astronomy. Appointment at the tenure‐track Assistant Professor level is the target of this search. The target starting date for this position is September 1, 2022. Interested applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications, research statement, and a diversity statement (describing past, and planned contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion), and contact information for a minimum of three reference letters to be sent in support of their application. The deadline for submission of all materials is January 15, 2022.

All materials should be submitted electronically, via the application link: https://physics.northwestern.edu/open-positions/open-faculty-positions/assistant-professor-in-astronomy-astrophysics.html
